Manuscript Studies at UBB

In the winter semester, CODEX is offering a third-year BA course in Manuscript Studies (in English) at the Faculty of Letters of the Babeș-Bolyai University. Course code: LLE 5122/5222.

DEEM Codicology Course

As a member of the Fédération Internationale d’Études Médiévales (FIDEM), CODEX contributes to the Federation’s Diplôme Européen d’Études Médiévales (DEEM), held in Rome (Prof. Adrian Papahagi teaches the “Codicology I” course). Philology, Philosophy and History students at the ‘Babeș-Bolyai’ University can attend the course thanks to an ERASMUS+ agreement with LUMSA-Rome.

International Summer School, July 2026

The summer school aims to introduce students to the description of medieval and early modern books and book fragments. Students will learn how to identify texts, how to localise bindings and book decoration, how to reconstitute the context of manuscript fragments, how to establish the provenance of manuscripts, incunabula, and early printed books, and how to use all these in a catalogue entry.

The access to little studied collections of medieval and early modern manuscripts, medieval manuscript fragments (together with their early modern host books), incunabula and early prints will allow students a hands-on approach. Courses will be complemented by workshops where students will be working with the original documents.
